I am Assistant Professor of Japanese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Irvine. My research—which has been recognized by the Fulbright Foundation, the Japan Foundation, and the Association for Asian Studies Council of Conferences—considers the confluences of modern and contemporary Japanese and African American literature and culture. I am currently working on a manuscript entitled Playing in the Shadows: Fictions of Race and Blackness in Postwar Japanese Literature. Playing in the Shadows is the first book-length study to consider the literature born of Japanese authors’ encounters with black thought, people, and culture.
